The area that is now East Hampton was settled in 1739, and was incorporated in 1767. The town's economy was at first largely driven by shipbuilding and related interests, centered at Middle Haddam on the Connecticut River , but these were in decline by the early 19th century.

East Hampton's first school dates back to the 17th century, where the school was one of four public buildings in a village of 50-60 homes. [9] The state-chartered Clinton Academy operated a one-room schoolhouse from about 1785 to 1881. [10] The modern school district traces back to 1894, when the first school opened on Newtown Lane. [11]
