Quality Inn was founded in 1939 as Quality Courts United, which was the first hotel chain in the United States. By 1946, the association grew to 50 hotels and to 100 hotels by 1952. [ 3 ] The group was among the first in the industry to offer wall-to-wall carpeting, daily linen changes, 24-hour desk service, and in-room telephones.
Its properties were typically two-story buildings with "gull wing" shaped roofs over the lobby. It was a limited-service hotel chain, competing mainly with Travelodge. [1] In 1965, Imperial 400 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. [2] Its headquarters were moved to Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and again to Arlington, Virginia.
Choice Hotels rebranded Comfort in 2018, which brought its Comfort Inn, Comfort Inn & Suites, and Comfort Suites brands under one umbrella. [44] Some of the Comfort properties that didn't meet Choice's standards for the brand were rebranded under the Quality Inn brand, as Comfort and Quality swapped market positions within Choice's hierarchy.
