Baarle-Nassau is closely linked, with complicated borders, to the Belgian exclaves of Baarle-Hertog.Baarle-Hertog consists of 26 separate parcels of land. Apart from the main parcel, known as Zondereigen and located north of the Belgian town of Merksplas, there are 22 Belgian exclaves in the Netherlands and three other parcels on the Dutch-Belgian border.

The police of Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau are located within the same office on the Parallelweg in Baarle-Hertog and are locally established. The local police officer of Baarle is sometimes called Dirco. The fire services of Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog merged into a single body on 1 January 2010.
In 2008, a 25-year old woman from Belarus was found dead in her home right on the border, about a year after she had gone missing. Parts of the house were in the Netherlands (Baarle-Nassau), other parts in Belgium (Baarle-Hertog). GPS measurements determined that her body was found just on the Dutch side of the border.
Netherlands and Belgium decided to keep the enclave and exclave system in Baarle. As both Netherlands and Belgium are members of the European Union and Schengen Area , people, goods and services flow freely with little or no restrictions.
