Alipurduar is a city and a municipality in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the Alipurduar district . Situated on the east bank of Kaljani River in the foothills of the Himalayas , the city is a gateway to Bhutan and the northeastern states of India.
According to the 2011 census, the total number of literate persons in the Alipurduar I CD block was 146,702 (76.19% of the population over 6 years) out of which males numbered 81,191 (82.09% of the male population over 6 years) and females numbered 65,511 (69.96% of the female population over 6 years).
Southern Boundary of Bhutan contained the present Alipurduar district before 1865 Duar War. The Dooars in Alipurduar district were under the control of Kingdom of Bhutan from early 17th-century till 1865 when British East India company captured the area in the Duar War under the Treaty of Sinchula and were added to the district of Jalpaiguri in 1869 and later finally to the Indian Union in 1949.
In 2018, West Bengal state government announced the decision to upgrade the Alipurduar College as a full-fledged university. [4] Finally, Alipurduar University was formally established by an Act of the West Bengal legislature. [5] [6] It became active with the appointment of the first vice-chancellor, Mahendra Nath Roy, in 2020. [7]
Alipurduar district is covered by two maps. It is an extensive area in the eastern end of the Dooars in West Bengal. It is undulating country, largely forested, with numerous rivers flowing down from the outer ranges of the Himalayas in Bhutan.
According to the 2011 Census of India, Alipurduar Railway Junction had a total population of 10,733 of which 5,370 (50%) were males and 5,363 (50%) were females. There were 902 persons in the age range of 0 to 6 years. The total number of literate people in Alipurduar Railway Junction was 8,755 (89.06% of the population over 6 years). [4]
The Western Dooars are part of the Duars of northern part of West Bengal, India or those located to the west of Goalpara district of Assam.The Western Dooars came under the British in 1865.The region comes under the Kalimpong district, Jalpaiguri district, Alipurduar district and some parts of Cooch Behar district.
