Leicester Academy was founded on March 23, 1784, when the Act of Incorporation for Leicester Academy was passed by the Massachusetts General Court as a private, state chartered institution. The charter issued to the Academy bears the bold signature of John Hancock , Governor of Massachusetts; and Samuel Adams , President of the Senate.

It has an enrollment of 722 students in grades 9-12 and 107 preschool attendees, as of the 2022–2023 school year. Founded in 1935, the original school building served the town until the spring of 2006.
