Sir William Felton the Elder of West Maften was a key figure in establishing the Felton family’s influence along the Anglo-Scottish border during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He served as High Sheriff of Northumberland and held successive appointments as Constable of four royal castles, initially in Wales and later in Northern England.

He was the son of John Felton (1585–1627) and Ellen Thrower (1588–1652). [3] His home was among the first built in what is now Peabody, Massachusetts.
