In 1969, I-95 was extended further south from Roanoke Rapids to exit 145, in Rocky Mount (later used for North Carolina Highway 4 [NC 4]). In 1973, I-95 was completed from St. Pauls to the South Carolina state line. By the mid-1970s, I-95 had two gaps along its route in Fayetteville and Kenly–Gold Rock.
North of Lumberton, it crosses I-95 twice before entering Fayetteville, overlapped with I-95 Business along Eastern Boulevard. North of Eastover , it encounters a connecting road to US 13 just before it crosses under North Carolina Highway 295 (NC 295), also known as Future I-295 , as it parallels I-95 to its immediate west.
NC 711 is a predominantly two-lane highway that travels from I-95/US 301 in Lumberton to NC 710 in Pembroke. South of the I-95 interchange, the road continues to the east towards downtown Lumberton as NC 72. NC 711 and NC 72 share a concurrency for 1 ⁄ 2 mile (0.80 km) north of the interchange.
I-95 Bus. traversed 44.6 miles (71.8 km) from Kenly (exit 107) to Gold Rock (exit 145).
