The university tradition of the Goa University also began during the Portuguese rule, with the installation of several institutions of higher education, the oldest one being the Goa Medical College, dating from 1691, [4] followed by the Mathematical and Military School, founded in 1817, and Goa College of Pharmacy, founded in 1842.
After the sudden end to Portuguese rule in Goa in 1961, higher education was sought to be expanded by the new Indian-directed administration through the University of Bombay. [3] The CPIR got functional in Goa between June 1962 [4] and continued working till the commencement of operations of the Goa University on June 1, 1985. [4]

Founded in 1967 and situated at Farmagudi plateau, Ponda, it is the oldest engineering college in Goa, with over 2,200 students.
In 2016, the Goa University imposed a penalty on the college, thereby permitting to admit only 38 students in the LL.B Course, as the college had admitted 82 students in 2015, by bypassing the threshold of 60 admissions. However, the university later permitted the college to admit 60 students, after the institution admitted its mistake. [62]
