The Pope Baldwin Bike Path is a paved bike path in Lake Tahoe, California that runs from the city limits of South Lake Tahoe, California to the beginning of the climb of California State Route 89 up Emerald Bay. [1] Along the way it passes by Pope, Kiva and Baldwin Beaches.
Near the eastern terminus is a junction with State Route 487, which leads to U.S. Bicycle Route 79 at the Utah state line near Garrison, Utah. The Nevada segment of USBR 50 includes 12 summits over 6,000 feet (1,800 m). It passes near Great Basin National Park. [4] [9] [10] [11]
It starts from U.S. Route 395 near Topaz Lake, winding its way up to the 8,314-foot (2,534 m) Monitor Pass, down to the Carson River, and up again over the 7,740-foot (2,359 m) Luther Pass. From that point on, the route generally loses elevation on its way past Lake Tahoe, through Tahoe and Plumas National Forests until Lake Almanor.
The organization responsible for planning and construction of the trail, Tahoe–Pyramid Bikeway, was formed in 2005 (the current name was adopted in 2018 to reflect its multi-use function). [ 2 ] The western portion between Tahoe and the Reno– Sparks area opened to hikers on October 5, 2019, [ 1 ] completing the California section of the trail.
US 50: Heads east from the Sacramento area through the South Lake Tahoe area before crossing into Nevada en route to Carson City. US 95: Enters into California from Arizona through a concurrency with I-10. US 95 then splits from I-10 in Blythe, then travels north to Needles before crossing into Nevada en route to Las Vegas
The road passes are generally listed from north to south, with their elevation and access road. The California Department of Transportation attempts to keep Donner Summit ( Interstate 80 , I-80), Echo Summit ( U.S. Route 50 , US 50) and Carson Pass ( State Route 88 , SR 88) open year-round.

The formation faces towards the northwest, and lie just south of Route 50, between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. The historic Pony Express trail roughly parallels Route 50, and runs directly beneath Lover's Leap. The closest major urban center is the Tahoe area about 10 miles to the northeast.
