Rosa × damascena (Latin for damascene rose), more commonly known as the Damask rose, [1] [2] or sometimes as the Iranian Rose, Bulgarian rose, Taif rose & "Emirati rose", Ispahan rose, Castile rose, and Đulbešećerka (Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans) is a rose hybrid, derived from Rosa gallica and Rosa moschata. [3]
Blooms are medium-large, 4—5 in (10—12 cm) in diameter, with a high-centered, cupped, and ruffled bloom form. Petal count is typically 26 to 40. Flowers are russet colored with a darker reverse, and have variation of chocolate and orange colors. The rose has a medium, fruity fragrance and large, glossy, dark green foliage.
The flowers are produced in large corymbs, each flower small, 1.5–4 cm (5 ⁄ 8 – 1 + 5 ⁄ 8 in) diameter, white or pink, borne in early summer. The hips are reddish to purple, 6–8 mm (15 ⁄ 64 – 5 ⁄ 16 in) diameter. Plants of the World Online and Flora of China [4] include the varieties:
The hybrid perpetual has cup-shaped flowers with a brilliant crimson colour and up to 50 petals, situated on long stiff stems.The buds are thick and globular and open to strongly scented, hybrid tea-like flowers with a diameter of 11 cm. [2] They appear in flushes over a long period, but according to the RHS Encyclopedia of Roses, only sparingly.
