Kenneth Downie is a composer of brass band music. He was born in Glasgow in 1946 and educated at Greenock High School, the Royal Manchester College of Music and Durham University. He then became a specialist music teacher in schools before leaving his position as Head of Music at Poole Grammar School to go into the jewellery business in 1976.
He worked with former national youth champions Mount Charles Youth Band, as well as the Devon County Youth band and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, for whom he wrote his composition Penlee. Dobson played horn in the Dirty Pop band, 'Men of Splendour', performing all over England, playing festival crowds in excess of 10,000 people.

The Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band is a British brass band formed in 1881. The band is based in Brighouse , in Calderdale , West Yorkshire , England. The band is known across the world, and is regarded by many as the best and most consistent "public subscription band" in the world.
In 1960, The Daily Herald newspaper and sponsors of brass band contests, commissioned Vinter to write his first major work for brass band, the result of which was Salute to Youth. Vinter was an adjudicator at the British Open Championships at Belle Vue, Manchester , in 1969 where his Spectrum was the test piece.
