The original project, named Expresso Bandeirantes, was to build a high-speed rail line between São Paulo and Campinas.The project was canceled in 2007 because the Brazilian government concluded that it was more viable to connect Campinas, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro with a single line 518 kilometres (322 mi) long.
In September 2008, Brazil's Transportation Ministry announced a high-speed train project for the world cup connecting São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Campinas. This would cost US$15 billion. These lines will use 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in) standard gauge.

A Moscow-Kyiv high-speed line was proposed in 2011, but Ukraine canceled the project after the 2014 annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Russia, which had purchased rolling stock for the planned rail line to Kyiv, used the trains on its Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod line.
