The New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN New Zealand Inc.) promotes and protects the interests of New Zealand writers. It was founded as the New Zealand PEN Centre (Poets, Essays and Novelists) in 1934. [1] It broadened its scope and became the New Zealand Society of Authors in 1994, [2] under the presidency of writer Philip Temple.
It is open to writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama. Applicants must be members of the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) and need to show that they are working on a new project which has a high level of literary merit and national significance. The successful applicant receives a stipend of $10,000.
The NZSA Waitangi Day Literary Honours are an annual award made by the Board of the New Zealand Society of Authors (Pen NZ Inc) Te Puni Kaituhi o Aotearoa (NZSA) after a call for nominations from NZSA members.
