Western Oregon University (WOU) is a public university in Monmouth, Oregon. It was originally established in 1856 by Disciples of Christ [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ] pioneers as Monmouth University . Subsequent names included Oregon State Normal School , Oregon College of Education , and Western Oregon State College .
Merged with Western Oregon University to form, in turn, Christian College in 1865, Oregon State Normal School in 1882, Oregon Normal School in 1911, and Oregon College of Education in 1939, which is Western Oregon University today. Monmouth is served by the Central School District and is the home of Western Oregon University.
