In 1953, the Forest Service gave McCoy the permit on the condition that he develop the mountain as a ski resort. A ski lodge followed in 1953, and the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area incorporated in 1955. [1] McCoy struggled to develop Mammoth. The "lodge" was actually only 12' by 24', had a dirt floor with an outside toilet, and served snacks.
The word was spreading throughout the region that Red Lodge Mountain was a fun place to ski and the old mining town of Red Lodge was full of western hospitality and colorful characters. [ 2 ] The ski area continued to grow with the addition in 1983 of the Winter Sports Center and the Triple Chair and the replacement of Midway Lodge in 1986.

McCoy is the daughter of Dave McCoy (b. 1915), the founder of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in California in 1953. She and her five siblings were raised in nearby Bishop. McCoy is the sister of Dennis McCoy (b. 1945), who was also a World Cup racer. He finished 21st in the downhill at the 1968 Olympics.
