William Henry Hartnell (/ ˈ h ɑːr t n ə l /; 8 January 1908 – 23 April 1975) was an English actor, who is best known for portraying the first incarnation of the Doctor, in the long-running British science-fiction television series Doctor Who from 1963 to 1966; he reprised the role in 1972–1973.
The First Doctor is the original incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who.He was portrayed by actor William Hartnell in the first three series from 1963 to 1966 and the tenth anniversary story The Three Doctors from 1972 to 1973.
William Hartnell also played the Doctor in an initial version of An Unearthly Child.
