In 1953 the North Company was reformed. Over the next 20 years it introduced roll-on/roll-off services to the North Isles to satisfy demand for faster, shorter ferry routes, rather than the old mail boats. [1] In 1961 the company was taken over by Coast Lines and in 1975 P&O and in 1975, renamed as P&O Ferries (Orkney & Shetland Services).
This was the longest route that P&O Ferries operated and was often late arriving due to the weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay. P&O took over the routes from the long-established North of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Company in 1971. They branded their services "P&O Ferries" from 1975 to 1989 and "P&O Scottish Ferries" thereafter. The services were taken over by NorthLink Orkney and Shetland Ferries in 2002. [1]

P&O European Ferries (formerly Townsend Thoresen), a division of P&O Ferries, was a ferry company which operated in the English Channel from 1987 after the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster, when Townsend Thoresen was renamed P&O European Ferries, until 1999 when the Portsmouth Operations became P&O Portsmouth and the Dover Operations were merged with Stena Line AB to make P&O Stena Line.
