Hat Creek (Achumawi: Hatiwïwi) [4] is a 48.7-mile-long (78.4 km) [5] stream and tributary of the Pit River, which is located in Shasta County of northern California.. The creek rises in two forks on the eastern slopes of Lassen Peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park, and flows northward through Lassen National Forest to its mouth at Lake Britton near Burney, California.
Hat Creek is situated at an elevation of 3,422 feet (1,043 m). [2] Its population is 266 as of the 2020 census, down from 309 from the 2010 census. Hat Creek is located 26 miles (42 km) north of Lassen Park, 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Burney (9 miles (14 km) south of the junction of hwy 89 and 299), and 15 miles (24 km) south of Burney Falls.
Burney Creek Hatchery was built by PG&E in lieu of installing a fish ladder over Dam 3 on the Pit River. It ran from 1927 to 1949, when the water supply in Burney Creek dried up and the hatchery had fallen into disrepair. Most of the operations were moved to Baum Lake after that, and Crystal Lake Hatchery was opened in 1947, with 24 raceway ponds.
The Pit River rises in several forks in Modoc, Lassen and Shasta counties in the northeastern corner of California. The 58-mile (93 km) South Fork Pit River - West Valley Creek - Cedar Creek source originates just southeast of Buck Mountain in the Warner Mountains, in the extreme southeastern corner of the Modoc National Forest 9 miles (14 km) west of the California–Nevada border.
Along the north shore lies North Shore and Dusty Campgrounds. It is fed by the Pit River and has tributaries of Clark Creek, Burney Creek, and Hat Creek and is impounded by the Pit #3 Dam.
