A Grammar of the Bengal Language is a 1778 modern Bengali grammar book written in English by Nathaniel Brassey Halhed. [1] This is the first grammar book of the Bengali language. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The book, published in 1778, was probably printed from the Endorse Press in Hooghly , Bengal Presidency .
In Telugu, a lakh is called లక్ష lakṣha and a crore is called కోటి kōṭi. In Urdu, a lakh is called لاکھ lākh and a crore is called کروڑ karoṛ. A billion is called arab (ارب), and one hundred billion/arab is called a kharab (کھرب). Lakh has entered the Swahili language as "laki" and is in common use.
Instead of the sentence "You have a book", possession in Bengali is expressed by the verb আছ- (for present and past tenses) and the verb থাকা (for future tense) inflected with the possessed object ("book") and a genitive (genitive) case for the possessor (i.e. তুমি → তোমার, you → your).
To curb the reader's curiosity, the first edition of this book was printed in 3 thousand copies. This number should be enough for those times. 33 lakh 60 thousand copies of this book were printed in 127 editions in 23 years from 1867 to 1890. That is, at this time, an average of 1 lakh 40 thousand copies of this book were printed annually.

At the same time, Nathaniel Brassey Halhed used a romanisation scheme based on English for his Bengali grammar book. After Halhed, the renowned English philologist and oriental scholar Sir William Jones devised a romanisation scheme for Bengali and other Indian languages in general; he published it in the Asiatick Researches journal in 1801.
