Rutherford B. Hayes High School is a public high school in Delaware, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in the Delaware City School District. The school's mascot is the Pacer, a tribute to the Little Brown Jug, which takes place in Delaware. The school is named after President Rutherford B. Hayes, who was born in Delaware in 1822.
Since 1981 Delaware has 19 school districts. In 2009 there were proposals to change the number of districts to three, one per county, to save costs, although various parents in the state preferred having local school districts so individual communities could have more influence over education.
It was founded in 1940 by James M. Grant. Originally, the school was staffed by sisters of the Benedictine order. St. Elizabeth High School shares many facilities with the St. Elizabeth Elementary School and receives a good share of its high school enrollment from the elementary school graduates. The school colors are maroon and gold.
The school is a member of the Colonial School District, and is the largest high school in the state of Delaware. The school mascot is the Colonial. In addition to New Castle the school district includes Delaware City, Port Penn, St. Georges, Wilmington Manor, portions of Wilmington, and half of Bear. [3]
In April 2012, the Delaware state board of education voted unanimously to allow the addition of a high school, which made Newark Charter the state's first K-12 charter school. [11] Newark Charter High School is located in the former Lear Corporation factory, which made car seats for the now closed Chrysler Newark Assembly plant. [ 12 ]
