Aluminium isotopes have found practical application in dating marine sediments, manganese nodules, glacial ice, quartz in rock exposures, and meteorites. The ratio of 26 Al to 10 Be has been used to study the role of sediment transport, deposition, and storage, as well as burial times, and erosion, on 10 5 to 10 6 year time scales.

Aluminium-26 can be used to calculate the terrestrial age of meteorites and comets. It is produced in significant quantities in extraterrestrial objects via spallation of silicon alongside beryllium-10 , though after falling to Earth, 26 Al production ceases and its abundance relative to other cosmogenic nuclides decreases.

Aluminium has a density lower than that of other common metals, about one-third that of steel. It has a great affinity towards oxygen, forming a protective layer of oxide on the surface when exposed to air.
