Police and crime commissioners (PCCs) are elected representatives with responsibility for policing in each police area in England and Wales. Each police area elects a commissioner every four years, with the exception of police areas where responsibility for policing has passed to regional mayors such as Greater London and Greater Manchester.
The PCC was elected by a supplementary vote system with a term of four years; however, elections scheduled for 2020 were postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [ 2 ] Since May 2023 the voting system was changed to the first past the post system [ 3 ] meaning the 2 May 2024 PCC elections were held under the changed system.

The most recent Avon and Somerset PCC election took place on Thursday 2 May 2024. This election used the first-past-the-post voting system, changed from the supplementary vote system used in 2021. [3] [4] The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner has about 31 staff. [5] [6]
The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner was elected by the supplementary vote system where there are three or more candidates, or the first past the post system if there are only two. [3] The first election took place in November 2012 (delayed from May 2012) and the next regular election was scheduled for May 2016.
Elections for the third term were scheduled for 6 May 2021, having been postponed from May 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, [6] [7] with the Conservative Party fielding a candidate for the first time in Caroline Henry, wife of Conservative MP Darren Henry.
