Yadkin County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 37,214 at the 2020 census. [1] Its county seat is Yadkinville. [2] Yadkin County is included in the Winston-Salem, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area.
Rockford was founded in 1790 to be the county seat of Surry after Surry was split to form Stokes County (including then modern-day Forsyth County as well as Stokes). The community was incorporated in 1819 but has been municipally inactive for many years (Powell 1968, p. 420).
West Yadkin is a focal point for the community and one of the largest schools in Yadkin, with about 800 students. In 1913, the first bridge across the Yadkin River at Enon was authorized by the North Carolina Legislature. The steel bridge was completed a short time before a sand-clay road was built in 1915. The road, which linked Winston-Salem to Yadkinville , was paved in 1925 and became part of U.S. Highway 421 . [ 16 ]
