The Thomaston CDP is slightly east of the geographic center of the town of Thomaston, on the west side of the Naugatuck River and its valley. It extends to the south as far as Watertown Road, to the west beyond Hillside Cemetery and to Northfield Brook, to the north to a power line south of D. Prior to 1963, the Thomaston-Northfield-Litchfield road was an unsigned state highway designated as State Road 854. As part of the 1962 Route Reclassification Act, SR 854 was renumbered to Route 254 at the beginning of 1963. In 1967, Route 254 was extended southward along South Main Street (former US 6) to the north end of SR 848.
It then crosses the northeast corner of Thomaston into Harwinton and loops westward briefly back and forth across the town line back into Thomaston and again into Harwinton.
