Edson Range is a firing range complex at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, near Oceanside, California. It is named for Marine Major General "Red Mike" Edson, "a World War II Medal of Honor recipient and a distinguished small arms marksman proponent." [1] This rifle-qualification complex is home to four of the largest firing ranges on the base. [2]
On December 1, 1921, the base was formally commissioned as the Marine Advanced Expeditionary Base San Diego. In 1923, the Marine Corps Recruit Depot for the west coast was relocated to the new base in San Diego from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California. On March 1, 1924, the base became officially the Marine Corps Base San Diego.
From 1942 through July 1944, during World War II, the airfield at Twentynine Palms was utilized by the U.S. Army Air Force for primary flight training. What is now the "Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center" was taken over by the Eleventh Naval District, headquartered in San Diego, as Naval Auxiliary Air Station Twentynine Palms, in July 1944.
The 1,063-acre (4 km 2) site has a firing range, an administration building, barracks, and a 5,000-metre (16,000 ft) length mountain endurance training course. The United States Navy has operated on the 1,300 acres (5 km 2) plus acres since the early 1960s, and is seeking to set aside an additional 4,486 acres (18.15 km 2) of federal Bureau of Land Management property for the facility.

Baywood Park Training Area opened in July 1943 as a branch of the Camp San Luis Obispo and Amphibious Training Base Morro Bay. The site was on 8,810 acres (3,570 ha) of leased land. The site is in the current town of Baywood-Los Osos, California and the Morro Bay State Park. The lease ended in 1947. [10] [11]
