Presently, around 80 countries participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad. All participants are ranked based on their individual scores and no official team scores are given. Gold medals are awarded to the top 12% of students, silver medals are awarded to the next 22% of students, and bronze medals are awarded to the next 32% of students.

The United States National Chemistry Olympiad (or USNCO) is a contest held by the American Chemical Society (ACS) used to select the four-student team that represents the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Each local ACS section selects 10 students (or more for larger ACS sections) to take the USNCO National Exam.
The table does not count revoked medals (e.g., due to doping). A total of 162 current and historical NOCs have earned at least one medal. Medal totals in this table are current through the 2024 Summer Olympics, and all changes in medal standings due to doping cases and medal redistributions up to 11 August 2024 are taken into account.
