This facility dates from 1985. Cotton, which is an inmate educational facility, is one portion of the former Michigan State Prison, described as the largest walled prison in the world as late as 1981, when it was rocked by extensive, damaging riots. [2] The prison was divided in 1988 into smaller institutions.
The prison was opened in 1999 and has seven housing units, occupying 67 acres (27 ha), used for Michigan Department of Corrections male prisoners 18 years of age and older. Six of the housing units are used by the general prison population, one of which is an Adaptive Skills Residential Program (ASRP) Unit.
The original Kinross Correctional Facility was opened on January 16, 1978, on the barracks grounds of the former Kincheloe Air Force Base [3] with an original capacity of 495 prisoners - which was increased to approximately 700 shortly after. At 113 acres (46 ha) it was the largest fenced area of any state prison in Michigan.
