At the beginning there were only three faculties at the University, namely: Geology and Oil Exploration, Petroleum Engineering and Refining. The first Rector of the University and the founders of its educational and research schools was its namesake Ivan M. Gubkin. From 1941 to 1943, during World War II, the University was evacuated to Ufa. [3]
