Calcasieu Parish was created in 1840 from the Parish of Saint Landry. The new parish was the largest in the state, larger than either of the two smallest states, Delaware and Rhode Island . [ 3 ] This size, which ultimately was divided into five parishes, led to the parish's nickname "Imperial Calcasieu."

The first official parish records began in May 1939. Earlier records were kept in Jennings, beginning in 1892, in Welsh from 1904 and Iowa from 1930. In 1950 the Rev. Daniel Habetz succeeded Father Cramers as pastor, and one of his first projects was the construction of St. Daniel Chapel in Hayes, on property donated by Mr. and Mrs. Felix Hebert.
DeQuincy is located in northern Calcasieu Parish at (30.450915, -93.435613 Louisiana Highways 12 and 27 pass through the center of town: LA 12 leads east 36 miles (58 km) to Kinder and southwest 22 miles (35 km) to Deweyville, Texas, while LA 27 leads north 31 miles (50 km) to DeRidder and south 17 miles (27 km) to Sulphur, 9 miles (14 km) west of Lake Charles.

A post office called Calcasieu was established in 1925, and remained in operation until 1960. [2] According to tradition, Calcasieu was named after an Atakapa chieftain. [ 3 ]
