Pudukkottai district is bounded on the northeast and east by Thanjavur District, on the southeast by the Palk Strait, on the southwest by Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts, and on the west and northwest by Tiruchirapalli District. As of 2011, the district had a population of 1,618,345 with a sex-ratio of 1,015 females for every 1,000 males.

Pudukkottai State covered a total area of 1,178 square miles (3,050 km 2) and had a population of 438,648 in 1941. It extended over the whole of the present-day Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu (with the exception of Aranthangi taluk which was then a part of Tanjore district). The town of Pudukkottai was its capital.

The Pudukkottai City Municipal Corporation is the municipal corporation which looks after the city administration of Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, India. The Tamil Nadu Government announced Pudukkottai as a New City Corporation on March 15 2024 by agglomerating 12 nearby village panchayats. This new city will be administered by a city Mayor.
