The size of the church is evidence of how Hitchin prospered from the wool trade. It is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire. [14] Most of the church dates from the 15th century, with its tower dating from around 1190.

St Mary's Church. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin dates to about 1150 but was probably preceded by a series of wooden Saxon churches on the same site. The church is built of flint with Ashwell clunch stone dressings to the buttresses and is mainly in the Early Perpendicular style.
