The wooden jail (pictured at left) was the first jail built for the county between 1855 and 1856. It housed prisoners until the brick jail (right) was constructed in 1910. By 1860, the county population was 13,422. The apparent drop was due to the counties of Kinchafoonee (later Webster County) and Quitman being created from Stewart County territory in 1853 and 1858, respectively. [7] There were 5,534 slaves in the redefined Stewart County, constituting more than one-third of the population. [9]
Georgia State Route 41 also runs through the community, leading 8 mi (13 km) north to the Webster County seat of Preston and 18 mi (29 km) south to Shellman. Weston is located at 31°58′40″N 84°36′56″W / 31.97778°N 84.61556°W / 31.97778; -84.61556 (31.977666, -84.615451
