Preston Dock was a former maritime dock located on the northern bank of the River Ribble approximately 1.6 mi (2.6 km) west of the city centre. It was the location of the Port of Preston at the Albert Edward Basin which opened in 1892 and is connected to the river by a series of locks.

The City of Preston, or simply Preston (/ ˈ p r ɛ s t ən / ⓘ), [2] is a local government district with city status in Lancashire, England. It lies on the north bank of the River Ribble and has a population of 151,582 (2022). [3] [4] The neighbouring districts are Ribble Valley, South Ribble, Fylde and Wyre.

Ashton-on-Ribble contains the historic Preston Docks, once the largest inland dock in Europe, the site is now largely residential living accommodation and leisure facilities. Ashton Park is within Ashton-on-Ribble, containing Ashton House, built in 1810 by Thomas Starkie Shuttleworth and later the home of Preston banker James Pedder.
