Captain George Mainwaring (/ ˈ m æ n ər ɪ ŋ /) is a fictional Home Guard captain, first portrayed by Arthur Lowe in the BBC television sitcom Dad's Army.In the 2016 film he is played by Toby Jones and in the 2019 remake of three missing episodes he is played by Kevin McNally.
Lowe also played Mainwaring in a radio version of Dad's Army, a stage play and a feature-length film released in 1971. He played Mainwaring's drunken brother Barry Mainwaring, in the series' 1975 Christmas episode "My Brother and I". While Dad's Army was not in production, Lowe's work continued to include stage roles.
He played Captain Mainwaring in the film Dad's Army, released in February 2016. In July, of the same year he starred as the eponymous agent Verloc in the BBC's The Secret Agent , a three-part television adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 1907 novel .
The Radio Times magazine listed Captain Mainwaring's "You stupid boy!" among the 25 greatest put-downs on TV. [1] A 2001 Channel 4 poll ranked Captain Mainwaring 21st on its list of the 100 Greatest TV Characters. [2] [3] In 2004, Dad's Army came fourth in a BBC poll to find Britain's Best Sitcom.

With Captain Mainwaring absent from the platoon, Sergeant Wilson signs on two new recruits into the platoon, the vicar and the verger. When Mainwaring returns from hospital, he learns of the changes that Wilson has made and does not approve.
However, when Captain Swan, a tough officer from GHQ arrives to take over command from him, implementing many of the same policies as he had, Mainwaring is himself outraged and the episode ends with him being locked out of his own office, thanks to Frazer telling Swan where the office is.
