The Black Mountain Lookout Cabin in Gila National Forest in or near Black Mountain, New Mexico, was built in 1925. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The Park was day-use only until the mid-1950s. The years 1955 and '56, however, saw several improvements to buildings and grounds including the construction of 25 cabins, a dammed fishing/skating lake, and a 55-room lodge dubbed "The Lodge in the Sky" (since the park is the highest in the state) which was opened and dedicated in 1957.
Black Rock Mountain State Park was established in 1952 and originally consisted of 1,000 acres (400 ha). Before the park was established, Rabun County native John V. Arrendale began assembling the area that would later become the park, making his first 70-acre (280,000 m 2 ) purchase in 1938.

The Family Cabin Historic District of Black Moshannon State Park consists of 16 contributing properties on 16.5 acres (6.7 ha): 13 cabins, one lodge and two latrines. Twelve of the cabins are laid out in a straight line along an access road, which is a design similar to that of motor courts of the 1930s.
