Take a look at any standard CRT television, and then look at this image... an interlaced video signal doesn't look like this. The brightness and color of the progressive scan side of the image don't match the interlace side, and the progressive scan side doesn't flicker at all (thanks to the high refresh rate of the computer monitor you are using).
