Oct. 25—Crater Lake National Park's North Entrance Road and Rim Drive closed for the season Monday due to snow over the past weekend and more snow in the forecast, park officials announced.
Rim Drive is a scenic highway in Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon, United States.It is a 33-mile (53 km) loop that follows the caldera rim around Crater Lake.Due to its unique engineering and the surrounding park landscape, the drive was listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
The scenery of Crater Lake is fully accessible during the summer months. Heavy snowfalls in this park during the fall, winter, and spring months force many road and trail closures, including the popular Rim Drive, which is generally completely open from July to October and partially open in some other months, such as May, June, and November.
Ride the Rim is challenging, with the typical route covering roughly 25 miles with 3,500 feet of climbing at elevations over 7,000 feet.
At Fort Klamath, the byway joins OR 62 and continues north for 16 miles (26 km), where it turns onto Munson Valley Road and enters Crater Lake National Park. At this point, the road becomes Rim Drive, a 33-mile (53 km) loop that follows the caldera rim around Crater Lake. At Merriam Point, Rim Drive splits and turns north.
