UTM has three campuses – the main campus is in Skudai, and was the first university in the state of Johor. It has an area of 1148 hectares and is the largest public university. The second largest was Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with an area size of 1108.103 hectares. It is about 20 km north of the state capital, Johor Bahru.

Skudai Highway (Lebuhraya Skudai), also known as Senai Highway (Lebuhraya Senai), Jalan Tun Abdul Razak or Jalan Skudai, Federal Route 1, is a 29 kilometre partial-access highway in Johor, Malaysia, from the town of Senai in Kulai District to Johor Bahru City in Johor Bahru District.
It is located between Skudai and Pulai. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a 5-minute drive away from Taman Universiti, hence the name of the town. The town is dominated by civil servants (lecturers, office workers) and students from UTM. The university alone has 30,000 students who mostly live on campus but visit the town to shop.
Skudai is located just outside the northwestern border of Johor Bahru, along national highway 1. The eponymous Skudai River separates Skudai from Tampoi ward of Johor Bahru. Adjacent towns include Kulai (north), Iskandar Puteri (southwest), Pekan Nanas (west) and the Johor Bahru suburbs of Kempas (east) and Tampoi (southeast).
