This United States Department of Defense (DoD) facility is at an elevation of 4,000 feet, within walking distance from Kilauea Volcano, the world's most active volcano. Between the airport and the coast lies the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii. Most of the land was formed in 1801 by the Huʻehuʻe lava flow from Hualālai.
