In the early 1850s, Mabry formed a landholding company that speculated in land on the periphery of Knoxville. In 1853, Mabry and his brother-in-law, attorney William G. The Market House on Market Square, constructed in 1897 and demolished in 1960. Beginning in the 1950s, Knoxville made serious efforts to reinvigorate the downtown area.
