Act of War is the most similar to Generals and is from 2005, while Act of Aggression is slightly more different but from 2015 (so it certainly looks nicer and has more modern quality of life features). Act of War: Direct Action. It came out at nearly the same time as Generals.

Only came out a year after Generals actually. There's also a sequel to AoC called Act of Aggression, but it's not as good. 16.
That barely scratches the surface. Big UI changes, tons of new features, matchmaking and ranked games, monthly rebalances and tons more. If you played the original AOE a lot, this is the best time ever to come back to the game. And it’s on sale often for $15!
