Community Mediation Centre logo. The Community Mediation Centres (CMCs) in Singapore come under the purview of the Ministry of Law.The work of the CMCs is overseen by the Community Mediation Unit (CMU), a department set up within the Ministry of Law to run CMCs’ day to day operations as well as promote the use of mediation in Singapore.
This work is carried out by 5 clusters: The Legal Education cluster comprises 3 divisions: Conference & Seminars, Training (workshops & courses) and e-Lex (eLearning programmes). The Legal Knowledge and Publishing cluster has the following functions: Academy Publishing, Law Reporting and Legal Heritage.
This centre, the Singapore Mediation Centre, was launched on 16 August 1997. SMC is limited by the guarantee of the Singapore Academy of Law, a body presided by the Chief Justice of Singapore and governed by a Senate, most of whose members are also judges of the Supreme Court. [2] SMC is located within the Supreme Court's premises.
SIMC maintains a panel of around 70 international mediators from 14 jurisdictions. They are certified by the Singapore International Mediation Institute, which acts as the professional standards body for mediation in Singapore. [6] SIMC's panel of mediators include Singapore's Ambassador-at-Large Tommy Koh and William Ury. [2]
The council is an upgrade from the former Workplace Safety Health advisory committee. [1] The WSHC works closely with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and other government agencies, various industry sectors, unions, and professional associations in the development of strategies and programs to raise workplace safety and health standards in Singapore.
