The Itaipu Dam (Guarani: Yjoko Itaipu; Portuguese: Barragem de Itaipu; Spanish: Represa de Itaipú) is a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. It is the third largest hydroelectric dam in the world, and holds the 45th largest reservoir in the world.
In the Guarani language, Itaipu means "the sounding stone". The dam is the second largest operating hydroelectric facility in terms of annual energy generation, generating 98.6 in 2013 and 87.8 TWh in 2014, while the annual energy generation of the Three Gorges Dam was 83.7 TWh in 2013 and 98.8 TWh in 2014.
The Three Gorges Dam in Hubei, China, has the world's largest instantaneous generating capacity at 22,500 MW of power. In second place is the Baihetan Dam, also in China, with a capacity of 16,000 MW. The Itaipu Dam in Paraguay and Brazil is the third largest with 14,000 MW of power.
Foz do Iguaçu is home of the Itaipu Dam, the world's second largest hydroelectric plant in power generation, after the Three Gorges Dam in China.
