Falkirk (/ ˈ f ɔː l k ɜːr k / FAWL-kurk; Scots: Fawkirk [ˈfɔːkɪrk]; Scottish Gaelic: An Eaglais Bhreac) is one of 32 unitary authority council areas of Scotland.It was formed on 1 April 1996 by way of the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 from the exact boundaries of Falkirk District, one of three parts of the Central region created in 1975, which was abolished at that time.
At the time of the local government reorganization of 1975, there was discussion on where the new region should be based – the options being Falkirk or Stirling, the latter of which was chosen as the county council had just finished construction of a new office building at Viewforth in the town in 1972.
The first municipal building in the town was the Falkirk Steeple which was completed in 1814. [2] After the area became a police burgh in 1859, [3] the burgh council decided to procure dedicated municipal buildings. The site they selected was on the north side of Newmarket Street. [4]
Falkirk South is one of the nine wards used to elect members of Falkirk Council. It elects three councillors. Following the resignation of Pat Reid, a local government by-election will be held on Thursday, 14 October 2021.
