John Riley (born February 14, 1964, in Marin County, California) is an American rower.. Riley began his career at the University of Rhode Island in 1982. Between 1986 and 1995, he raced on ten United States National Championship teams, rowed in two Olympic Games (1988: Seoul, South Korea; 1992: Barcelona, Spain), and participated in the 1990 Goodwill Games. During his time on the rowing team at URI, he would win gold medals his freshman (1982) and junior (1984) years at the Dad Vail Collegiate National Rowing Championships. After graduating in 1985, he would take his first coaching job as an assistant at The University of Rhode Island from 1986 to 1987and later become the head coach from 1989 to 1991.
Since 2006, Donohoe has been head coach of the University of Rhode Island women's rowing. With the following achievements: 2007, Atlantic 10 Coach of the year. 2008, Atlantic 10 championship & coach of the year. 2010, Atlantic 10 championship & coach of the year.
The regatta was named after Harry Emerson "Dad" Vail, for his years of coaching at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.. The story of the Dad Vail Regatta, and of the Rowing Association, begins with two men, "Rusty" Callow, then coach at the University of Pennsylvania, who came up with the idea, and Lev Brett, who made the idea a reality.

The University of Rhode Island Club Sports program consists of 13 teams. Each team is organized and managed by students with guidance from the Coordinator of Club Sports. They include Soccer, Tennis, Hockey, Field Hockey, Rowing, Sailing, Rugby, Swimming, Volleyball, Gymnastics, and Equestrian.
