St. Boniface Indian School was a Roman Catholic American Indian School in Banning, California. It belonged to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles . [ 1 ] It opened in 1890, providing vocational education to Cahuilla , Serrano , Luiseño , Kumeyaay , and other American Indians.
A school was erected in 1832, which served as a church on Sunday. It was the first Catholic church in the region. [4] St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church was established near the school in 1834, named for Saint Boniface, the apostle of Germany. [6] [7] The current church was erected in 1877. [6] In 1852, a two-room brick school was built.
