The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a museum in Forest Hill, London, England. Commissioned in 1898, it opened in 1901 and was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend in the Modern Style . Frederick, born in Bridgwater, Somerset, was born into a Quaker family, the son of John Horniman, who established Horniman's Tea, a tea business using mechanical packaging. By 1891, it was said to be the biggest tea company in the world. [2] He founded the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, south London.
In the 1870s, the business was taken over by his son Frederick John Horniman (1835–1906), who subsequently invested much of his fortune for social purposes. An avid collector since childhood, he travelled extensively, and founded and built the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, South London, to house his various collections. [2]
