Sigma Xi was founded at Cornell University by a junior faculty member and a small group of graduate students in 1886 and is one of the oldest honor societies. Omicron Delta Kappa became a member of the Association of College Honor Societies since March 30, 1930. It resigned that membership in 2005. Today, the society participates in a more loosely coordinated lobbying association called the Honor Society Caucus.
