In 1872, a racetrack, grandstand, bar, and restaurant were constructed by the Monterey County Agricultural Association on 69.4 acres (281,000 m 2) in Salinas. The land was donated to the city by Eugene Sherwood and Richard Hellman of San Francisco, on the condition that a fair and race would be held at least once every two years.
The Monterey Pop Festival is a well known precursor to many notable musical and cultural movements throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The fairgrounds claims to still have access to Jimi Hendrix's guitar burn marks, from where he lit his guitar on fire during the 1967 Pop Festival.

David Jacks (18 April 1822 – 11 January 1909) was a powerful Californian landowner, developer, and businessman. Born in Scotland, he emigrated to California during the 1849 Gold Rush, and soon acquired several thousand acres in and around Monterey, shaping the history of Monterey County in the first decades of American possession.
