Tivat (Serbo-Croatian: Tivat/Тиват, pronounced) is a town in Coastal region of Montenegro, located in the Bay of Kotor. As of 2011 [update] , its population was 9,367. [ 2 ] Tivat is the centre of Tivat Municipality , which is the smallest municipality by area in Montenegro.
Tivat is 19 kilometres (12 miles) away from Herceg Novi, 10 km (6.2 mi) away from Kotor, 23 km (14 mi) away from Budva, 80 km (50 mi) from Dubrovnik and 90 km (56 mi) from Podgorica. Geomorphologically, Tivat is composed of three areas.

For several years (1385–1391), the city of Kotor also recognized the suzerainty of the Kingdom of Bosnia. After 1391, it gained political independence, and functioned as a city-state until 1420. Its merchant fleet and importance gradually increased, but so was the interest of the powerful Republic of Venice for the city and the bay region.
Tivat Airport is located in the Mrčevac settlement, on the southern outskirts of Tivat urban area, 7 km (4 mi) from the Kotor city center, and 20 km (12 mi) north-west of Budva. The passenger terminal is served by Adriatic Highway (E65/E80).
